The Santa Engrácia organ was built between 1785 and 1786 by Joaquim Peres Fontanes, one of the most important portuguese organ builders. It was initially built for the Lisboa cathedral along with another twin organ, both located on the chancel facing each other, on the Gospel and Epistle side. Later, in 1967, the Epistle organ was removed to allow a new Flentrop organ to be installed, offered by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. At this time, the baroque organ was completely repaired and moved to the Santa Engrácia church – one of the National Pantheons (Panteão Nacional) – which still hadn’t organ, as the construction works started in the 17th century and lasted until 1966.

The organ is totally gilded, mixing baroque motifs. It is played from a single 51-key divided manual (with split stops to bass and treble) and a small pedalboard. Despite having just a keyboard, the instrument has two sections – Órgão principal (main organ) and Órgão de eco (echo organ). The pedalboard sounds with a 16′ principal and has a permanent coupler to the first octave. There is a pedal that activates or removes some of the “Órgão principal” stops, allowing the use of the Echo organ alone. The reeds “em chamada”, characteristic from the Iberian organ school, contribute to the visual composition, creating an ondulating line below the facade pipework.

Its twin organ is still at the Lisboa cathedral, has similar characteristics and is currently inoperational, as both were in the beginning of the 20th century.
